Effective from April 2022, the Streamlined Energy Carbon Reporting (SECR) is a mandatory scheme in the UK which replaced the carbon reduction commitment programme and other former legislation.

Companies that meet certain criteria are legally required to annually report carbon emissions and energy usage.

Who needs to report?

SECR will affect large companies and limited liability partnerships in the UK that consume more than 40,000 kWh and meet two or more of the following criteria:

• Have over 250 employees
• Annual turnover greater than £36m 
• Annual balance sheet total greater than £18m

What is reported through SECR?

Large UK incorporated unquoted companies and LLPs are required to report the following:

• Consumption and emissions from electricity and gas usage, and transportation
• Outline of actions being taken to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions

UK incorporated quoted companies are required to report the following:

• Consumption and emissions from electricity and gas usage, and transportation
• Outline of actions being taken to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions
• Breakdown of all on-site emissions generated in the UK and overseas

Failure to comply with the reporting requirements of SECR can result in companies being struck off the register and fined up to £15,000.
